The design of the $10 Liberty Gold Eagle pays tribute to two of this nation’s most beloved icons: Lady Liberty and the bald eagle. Displayed on the coin’s obverse is Christian Gobrecht’s rendition of Lady Liberty. She is depicted in profile, wearing an inscribed crown on top of her elaborately styled curls. Viewers will note that Gobrecht’s portrait includes many of the aesthetics common to Ancient Greco-Roman art such as the shape of Lady Liberty’s features and the arrangement of her hair. Also incorporated into the front artwork is a border of thirteen stars, accompanied by the coin’s mintage date. The reverse side of the coin has been embossed with the Heraldic Eagle, which depicts the national bird as it carries a shield, an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Printed along the edge of the coin are its denomination and country of origin. Customers should note that Liberty Gold Eagle Coins minted after 1866 feature the additional design element of an unfurling scroll that reads, “In God We Trust.” This will appear directly above the eagle.
