Krugerrands are 22-karat gold specimens that have 91.67% gold content with 8.33% copper.
South African Krugerrands are available, as of 2017, in both gold and silver bullion. While the gold series has various weights available, the silver series has only a 1 oz silver coin. The gold coin series offered only a 1 oz coin from 1967 to 1980, with fractional-ounce gold coins introduced that year that expanded the series significantly.
Paul Kruger is featured in left-profile relief on the obverse of 2022 South African Gold Krugerrand Coins. The effigy of Paul Kruger is shown in a design that was created in the 1890s for use on the gold coins of the South African Pound in circulation at the time. This effigy was most recently updated in 1984, but is still based on the design from Otto Schultz that was created in 1892. Kruger was a famous Boer figure in South Africa during the Boer Wars between the indigenous population and the British.
