2023 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coin (BU)

The United States Mint started producing the American Eagle program back in 1986. It started with the American Eagle silver coin and the American Eagle gold coins, which involved a 1-troy-ounce version and three other fractional sizes. The 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coin is the smallest of the program. Therefore, one could argue it is an affordable way of enjoying the benefits of gold investment while sticking to a strict budget.

    Design

The obverse of the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle is arguably one of the most famous designs in coinage ever. It features a modified version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, first used in the $20 Double Eagle gold coin. The scene shows the Goddess, a personification of freedom, striding ahead with her left foot over a rock. Her right arm is stretched forward as she holds a lit torch. Her left arm is wide open to the side, holding an olive branch. In the background, the Capitol Building is visible on the lower-left face of the coin, as an array of sunlight shines on Lady Liberty’s back. The writing on the outer circle above read the word “LIBERTY” and, encircling the whole scene, is a series of six-pointed stars.

The United States Mint introduced a new reverse design in the second half of 2021. AIP artist Jennie Norris created the design. She portrayed a bald eagle’s head earnestly gazing to the horizon in its left profile. The artist gave incredible attention to detail to the eagle’s beak, the feathers surrounding its necks, and the markings around its eye. The artist’s initials “JN” are right under the eagle’s neck.

The other inscriptions on this face of the coin read, right above the eagle’s head, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” both mottos of the United States of America. On the outer rim is the country’s name, “The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the face value and gold 5 DOLLARS – 1/10 oz. FINE GOLD”.
